Can you know everything about colour without ever seeing it?
Introduction
Imagine a world devoid of colour, where everything you see is rendered in stark shades of black, white, and grey. You have never seen a blue sky, a green leaf, or a vibrant red apple, but what if you knew everything there was to know about the science of those colours?
This thought experiment was devised by Australian philosopher Frank Jackson to challenge a dominant scientific and philosophical view known as Physicalism. Physicalism is the doctrine that there is nothing in the universe over and above the physical constituents of our world. If you know all the physical facts about a system—the neurology, the chemistry, the functional dynamics—you theoretically know everything there is to know about it.
Yet, when Mary finally leaves her monochrome room and sees a ripe red tomato for the first time, it seems intuitively obvious that she experiences a profound revelation. She learns what it is like to see red, something her textbooks could never convey.
Does Mary learn a new fact about the world when she steps outside?The Knowledge Argument
According to Frank Jackson, the answer is undeniably yes. He argues that Mary possessed every conceivable piece of physical information about the visual system before she left the room. Therefore, if she learns something new upon seeing red, it must mean that her previous knowledge was incomplete. This implies that there are facts about the world that are non-physical. Specifically, she learns what it is like to experience the subjective, qualitative feeling of colour, an element of consciousness that philosophers refer to as Qualia.
Frank Jackson:All along their experiences had a feature conspicuous to them but until now hidden from her. But she knew all the physical facts about them all along; hence, what she did not know until her release is not a physical fact.
If Qualia cannot be captured by entirely physical explanations, then Physicalism is false. The scientific method, which relies on objective, third-person observations, will forever fail to bridge the explanatory gap and describe the rich, subjective first-person reality of being alive. This line of reasoning is formally known as The Knowledge Argument, and its polemical strength lies in how strongly our intuition agrees with Mary’s sense of revelation.
However, accepting that Qualia exist outside the physical realm leads to a thorny complication. If they are not physical, how do they interact with our physical brains? Frank Jackson adopts a controversial stance to solve this, known as Epiphenomenalism. This theory suggests that while our physical brain states cause our conscious experiences, those conscious experiences have absolutely zero causal power to influence our physical behaviour in return. They are merely a useless by-product, much like the heavy weight of a polar bear's coat is a useless by-product of its evolutionary need for warmth.

Many thinkers find the notion that our rich inner lives do absolutely nothing to be incredibly hard to swallow. Philosopher Patricia Churchland attacks the knowledge argument directly by pointing out that it commits a logical fallacy known as equivocation. She argues that the word "knows" is used in two entirely different senses across the thought experiment.
In the black-and-white room, Mary "knows" about colour in a conceptual, theoretical sense, much like reading a medical textbook. When she leaves the room, she "knows" colour in a prelinguistic, sensory manner. Patricia Churchland draws an excellent parallel: a childless obstetrician can know every single biological fact about pregnancy, while an untutored mother knows the physical sensation of being pregnant. They both know the exact same process, just through different methods of apprehension. The doctor does not become pregnant simply by reading the textbook, just as Mary does not have a red sensation merely by learning the neurophysiology.
Furthermore, Patricia Churchland asserts that the thought experiment unfairly relies on our current, highly limited understanding of the brain. We are asked to imagine Mary knowing a "utopian neuroscience", a completed science that we cannot even begin to fathom. A monk in the Middle Ages might have argued that knowing all of biology would still leave out the magical "vital spirit" of life, because he couldn't comprehend DNA. Similarly, it is a failure of our own imagination to stubbornly insist that a genuinely complete neuroscience could not allow Mary to accurately synthesise and recognise the sensation of red before ever seeing it.
Patricia Churchland:Gedanken-experiments are the stuff of theoretical science, but when their venue is so surpassing distant from established science that the pivotal intuition is not uncontroversially better than its opposite, then their utility in deciding issues is questionable.
The Phenomenal Illusion
Another devastating critique of the knowledge argument comes from philosopher Victoria McGeer, who targets the methodological incoherence of the anti-physicalist stance. Those who champion Mary's Room often jointly support the modal argument, which hinges on the logical possibility of the Philosophical Zombie. A Philosophical Zombie is an exact physical replica of a human being that behaves entirely normally but possesses absolutely no inner mental life or Qualia. If zombies are logically possible, the argument goes, then Physicalism must be false because physical properties alone are insufficient to guarantee consciousness.
However, Victoria McGeer points out a glaring contradiction. Imagine Zombie Mary confined in her black-and-white room, absorbing all the physical facts. Because she is a perfect physical replica, when she is finally released and looks at a red tomato, her physical brain state mirrors real Mary's exactly. As a result, Zombie Mary will inevitably make the behavioural judgement, "Wow, I just learned something new!"
But Zombie Mary does not have Qualia. She has no inner experience. Therefore, her judgement that she learned a new non-physical fact is completely false—it is a phenomenal illusion generated entirely by her physical neurophysiology reacting to new stimuli. Victoria McGeer argues that if a purely physical transformation is sufficient to trick Zombie Mary into believing she discovered a magical non-physical fact, it is entirely sufficient to trick normal Mary as well. We cannot trust our deep-seated intuition that conscious experience operates outside the boundaries of physical science.

Decades after it was first published, the puzzle of Mary's Room remains one of the most hotly debated thought experiments in philosophy. It brilliantly illuminates the "explanatory gap"—the seemingly unbridgeable chasm between objective neurological mechanisms and the vivid, subjective tapestry of human experience.
While critics like Patricia Churchland and Victoria McGeer present formidable arguments defending the completeness of the physical sciences, the raw intuitive force of Frank Jackson’s monochrome scientist stepping into a vibrant world refuses to go away. It forces us to confront a deeply unsettling possibility about the universe and our place within it. Given the inherent limitations of our own heavily biased, subjective perspective, is the true nature of consciousness something we can ever objectively know?
